After Kim Philby’s betrayals, Central Intelligence is so paralyzed by fear of Soviet penetration that only risk-free operations are sanctioned by Counterespionage Staff under Joshua Adams, Philby’s great friend from the wartime OSS.

Into this morass of inaction and suspicion, Hubbell Adams, a Navy pilot, returns from Vietnam too scarred to take up his intended career in the law. Hubbell, inducted into CIA because of his family connection, despite his pitiful inexperience is made point man on the only operation going simply because Joshua will not approve it with anyone else in charge. The operation, conducted in association with the Israelis for whom Aron Hirsch is in charge, is to recruit the key KGB man in Egypt, Alexander “Babe” Bibikov, for defection to the US. Aron is the estranged husband of Belinda, with whom Hubbell had an affair. That’s just the start of the tension and danger that will end in the humiliation and expulsion of the Russians from Egypt, and the famous rapprochement between Egypt and Israel in the Camp David Accords.

Cold War, Hot Passions is true history through the eyes of those who risked their lives to make it.

“A masterly story that has pace, humor, tension and excitement with the bonus of truth.”
The Australian

EMPIRE
Book 6 of the 75-Year Saga
Cold War, Hot Passions
by André Jute

These grandchildren of revolutionary heroes are high-flying students at the prestigious Institute of International Relations. Piotr, an old-style hardliner who believes that the glorious aims of Lenin’s revolution justifies any means, however base, is sponsored by the KGB and, even more sinisterly, by Marshal Kurusov of the Politburo. But Babe and Vladimir, even as students, are starting to grasp that communism has failed Russia.

Babe, Vladimir and Piotr all join the KGB. Vladimir shortly becomes an aide to Andropov and marries Nina. Babe distinguishes himself in Egypt and meets the CIA agent Hubbell Adams, whom he does not report to his superiors. His marriage to the supremely beautiful but selfish Nadia is strained by his questioning attitude which threatens their good life. On a boar hunt with grandfather Nikolai and Brezhnev, Sergei Kurusov and Andropov recruit Babe and Vladimir for a mysterious plan to regenerate Russia. Meanwhile Piotr is rising through the ranks of the spetsnaz, the most thuggish and loyal of Russia’s special forces.

Babe betrays Soviet machinations in Egypt to the Americans and in July 1971 defects to the US. Nadia returns to Moscow and becomes a ‘swallow’, using her body to extract secrets from diplomats. In the US, Babe is incarcerated in solitary confinement by the brutal CIA man Conrad Drexler (one of Nadia’s lovers).

The exploration of the mindset of the Revolution is fascinating. The complex nature and motivations of the revolutionaries and the sorry state of Russia at the time are explored in a way that makes the suffering palpable in an engaging way without pretending that the people who want to be in charge are necessarily as noble or capable as some of them would like to believe. The author does a good job of presenting the Revolution itself as a another character, and through its atmosphere and details begins to offer a commentary and explanation for what history will further bring.
J. A. Beard/Good Book Alert

It reads like a literary classic and as a screenplay for a historical documentary miniseries. The language is lush, vibrant even when describing the horrors associated with the Bolshevik Revolution. The imagery through words painted by author Andre Jute makes me feel that I am moving through an art gallery where I wish to study every aspect, explore every color, more than once. I cannot remember when I have read a book of this caliber in recent years.

BROTHERS & ENEMIES
Stalin was paranoid. He had good reason to be. He planned a new Terror. Somebody plotted to kill him before he could start the new cycle of arrests and executions. But it wasn’t the Jewish doctors Stalin killed for it. The plotters were people Stalin overlooked as
totally loyal, true patriots.
PRIVATE INTIMATIONS
In immediately postwar Italy, among the reprisals and communist wrecking, Joshua Adams and Hillel Hirsch play off the Mafia and the Camorra on the international black market to raise the funds to buy an entire nation, plus the loyalty of the yet-to-be Israeli they aid and abet against the British, who want only to send Jewish refugee ships bound for Tel Aviv to the bottom of the Mediterranean. In Ankara, meanwhile, their friend Kim Philby is hours from being exposed.
TROPIC OF TREASON
William Harvey McQueen is the FBI’s point man against Stalin’s killer goons and atomic spies. Years before he would beintroduced to President Kennedy as “the American James Bond”, he exposes spies with offices in the White House itself. Tropic of Treason tells how— and above all why — David Adams recruits Harvey McQueen to the CIA, where he exposes Burgess, McLean and Philby as Russian spies.

Cold War, Hot Passions Omnibus One by André Jute: a satisfying Christmas read

Cold War, Hot Passions Omnibus One
by André Jute
the collected first three volumes of COLD WAR, HOT PASSIONS

the epic saga of ten intertwined Russian and American families who live and die by their love of liberty and the searing passions their fight for freedom arouses in war and peace.

“Wild but exciting. A grand job with plenty of irony.”

“Jute has clearly conducted a great deal of research into everything he describes, investing the novel with an air of prophecy. His moral concerns are important.”

THE GREATEST CONSPIRACY THE WORLD HAS EVER KNOWN STARTED WITH THE STORMING OF THE WINTER PALACE

In the beginning they were impassioned young revolutionaries risking only their own lives for justice. The prince, the soldier, and the peasant became the patriarchs of three families whose generations are enfolded in the sweep of humans and inhumans, inquisitors and victims, that tells the story of the KGB — which is the story of Russia in the Twentieth Century — from the day Lenin created it as the Cheka in the Smolny Convent: the Extraordinary Commission from the beginning and from the inside, motivated by its own imperatives of fear and fanaticism, through the murders of whole classes, the massacres of kulaks, the betrayals of friends and family, the show trials of colleagues, the psychiatric tortures of dissidents, right up to glasnost, when the fourth generation must answer the question, Was the result worth three generations of suffering and sacrifice?

While on the other side of the world a slumbering giant awoke slowly to a threat, not of a Russian bear stirring, but of German tanks rumbling…

THE GREATEST SECRET INTELLIGENCE AGENCY THE WORLD HAS EVER KNOWN BEGAN AS ONE MAN’S DREAM

There was David, the Boston patriarch, comrade of “Wild Bill” Donovan and father of the intelligence mandarin Joshua. And Joshua’s friends. The roistering, confessing Richard, the last soldier-priest. Joe-Bob from the Louisiana swamps, who saw the power of politics, an artist with a knife. Hillel, the penniless Jewish refugee from Germany, equally handy with a pistol or a computer. Harvey McQueen, the permanent outsider, the greatest spy of all time, who exposed Kim Philby and dug the Berlin Tunnel into the heart of Russia’s darkest secrets.

And their women. Virginia, the senator’s daughter. Nicole the Resistance fighter. Giselda the German spy. Jen whom the pressure turned into a lush. Belinda the brain. Fiona the faithful.

And there was Hubbell, who saw the final truth. He knew it was greater than power could ever be—and gladly risked the world for it.

There were two cars. One took away their jumpsuits and parachutes. They climbed into the other car. David sat beside the driver, a woman. He leaned over the back of his seat. ‘The Contessa de Grubelli drove racing cars before the war but I hope her skill will not be called upon tonight. I asked General Donovan to send me his very best men.’

‘To do what?’ Hillel asked.

‘To take over a country.’

‘It had better be a small country, sir,’ Richard said. ‘There are only three of us.’

‘It is only a small country.’

‘Then between us and the sea we got them surrounded,’ the irrepressible Joe-Bob laughed.

Gone With The Bolsheviks?
Review by Doug Glassford

How do I describe this book… it reads like a literary classic and as a screenplay for a historical documentary miniseries. The language is lush, vibrant even when describing the horrors associated with the Bolshevik Revolution… as with any great nation that suffers the chaos of change brought about by a sudden shift in government. This story follows the lives of three generations of strangers who became fast friends in a decidedly unfriendly environment. Idealists and realists intertwine as things that keep spinning out of balance are justified and vilified in this dense, tense telling of a true historical event; one that helped shape our world into what it is today.

Good character-driven historical fiction
Review by J. A. Beard

Vanguard Elite is an engaging character-driven look at the Revolution that marked the beginning of the Soviet Union.

Revolution comes from suffering.

Andre Jute’s Vanguard Elite focuses on a few key events before and during the “Red October” Bolshevik Revolt. True to the nature of the events, some very humble Russians get a front-eye view, alongside some more familiar names such as Lenin and Stalin. Indeed, the main focus is on a more character-driven narrative involving characters from several different backgrounds that all end up being involved in the Revolution. This is the first in a multi-volume series tracing several characters and families throughout the life of the Soviet Union. The character development is all top notch, and even many of the characters who get only brief attention still have a depth to them that makes them linger.

The exploration of the mindset of the Revolution is also quite fascinating. Some key events are alluded to, and for the others, a Revolutionary’s eye view is provided. Despite the rhetoric coming from the revolutionaries the book eschewed any simplistic depiction of plucky revolutionaries versus the state. Instead, the complex nature and motivations of the revolutionaries and the sorry state of Russia at the time are explored in a way that makes the suffering palpable in an engaging way without pretending that the people who want to be in charge are as necessarily as noble or capable as some of them would like to believe. The author, in a sense, does a good job of presenting the Revolution itself as a sort of another character, and through its atmosphere and details begins to offer a commentary and explanation for what history will further bring.
