Covering Kat’s Mom

This is a discussion cover for my friend Kat Jordan, who wants it to cover her mother’s collection of short stories. There is more chatter about it here from message 74.

  1. The cover looks bare without the filler of bricks.

    • The design is to show you what I suggested on ROBUST that you do with the type. I could easily lift the bridge illustration from your art, so I put it in. The bricks couldn’t be extracted from the type because you’re using the wrong software, so I just left the space white.

It looks discreet and tasteful with the white space, but it won’t work on Amazon unless you put a frame around it as I have above, or add a cream background or something else to define the boundaries of the book. The ideal, if you don’t put the bricks back, is to choose a chunkier typeface and make each slug of text the width of the entire cover. The chunker typeface will however fight the content. Graphic design is like that, swings and roundabouts, compromises.

You want the bricks, put them back, or send me the art for the bricks to insert.

  2. The bricks were a filler pattern. I can send you a sample.

  3. Send me enough bricks to cover the width and I’ll just make the cover and return it. It’ll be faster.
